Why is it necessary to use pure zinc wire for thermal spraying on galvanized welded pipes?

Sep 05, 2024

The main purpose of thermal spraying zinc wire on galvanized welded pipes is to repair and enhance the

anti-corrosion performance. Although the surface of the galvanized welded pipe already has a layer of

zinc coating, in some cases, especially during production, processing or use, this layer of zinc coating may be

damaged, resulting in a decrease in the anti-corrosion performance of the pipe. The following are the specific

roles of thermal spraying zinc wire on galvanized welded pipes:

1. Repair the damage of the galvanized layer

During welding, cutting or processing, the galvanized layer may be damaged, exposing the steel substrate of the

pipe. These exposed areas are very susceptible to corrosion. By using thermal spraying zinc wire technology, the

galvanized layer can be quickly repaired, covering the damaged parts and preventing further development of

corrosion.

2. Enhanced anti-corrosion performance

Even an intact galvanized layer may gradually be corroded or oxidized during long-term use. Thermal spraying

zinc wire can form an additional zinc layer on the basis of the galvanized layer, thereby enhancing the overall

anti-corrosion performance of the pipe and extending its service life. Especially in harsh environments

(such as humidity, chemical plants, etc.), the additional zinc spray layer can significantly improve the corrosion

 resistance of the pipe.

3. Increase the thickness of the zinc layer

Thermal spraying can increase the thickness of the zinc layer on the surface of the pipe, which is very important for

some application scenarios that require enhanced protection. For example, in marine or industrial environments,

due to the high corrosive components in the air, a thicker zinc layer is required to prevent corrosion of the steel

pipe.

4. Improve the protection of welding points

When welding galvanized welded pipes, the galvanized layer around the welding points may be destroyed due to

high temperature, causing the steel in these areas to be exposed to the air and prone to corrosion. By thermally

spraying zinc wire on the welding points, these vulnerable parts can be re-covered to prevent corrosion and ensure

the overall durability of the pipeline.

5. Electrochemical protection

Zinc has a low electrochemical potential. When it comes into contact with steel, it will corrode first, thereby acting

as a sacrificial anode to protect the steel from corrosion. Thermally sprayed zinc wire can provide an additional

sacrificial anode layer for galvanized welded pipes, further improving the corrosion resistance of steel pipes.

Conclusion

In general, thermal spraying of zinc wire on galvanized welded pipes is mainly used to repair coating defects and

enhance corrosion resistance, especially at welding points, processed areas or environments that require higher

protection requirements. Through this process, the service life of the pipe is significantly extended and can

effectively cope with various corrosive environments.
